24 Jan 2012 is the date set for Spanish judge Baltazar Garzón's trial.

Internationally renowned for trying to bring dictators to justice, Garzón now faces trial for attempting to do the same thing in his own country.

He is accused of overreaching his authority by investigating the crimes committed by Franco and his supporters during the Spanish Civil War and subsequent dictatorship, and in doing so breaching the Amnesty Law of 1977 (banning investigation into political crimes during the dictatorship). Garzón argues that an amnesty law does not apply to crimes against humanity.
